Welcome, Autumn and Winter!
I feel like this is the most wonderful and magical time of year. A time of change and renewal. What better way to kick off the season and set the mood than with some special essential oil blends? I personally like to come up with my own scents rather than buying already made ones. This way I can perfectly capture and recreate favorite memories and things from my environment. As the seasons change so does the light and the feel of the air. The earth, trees, and flowers give off different colors and fragrances. I try to keep all of this in mind when mixing oils to get it just right…
Here are some holiday-themed recipes that I came up with that I think you will really enjoy. Feel free to use them as inspiration for creating your own blends. These make wonderful gifts for family and friends too!
Autumn Diffuser Blends
Make your home smell delicious with scents of cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, and orange peel, freshly baked pies, hot tea, spiced punch… Or bring the outdoors in with the scents of crisp air, falling leaves, crackling fires…
I am a huge fan and connoisseur of all things that smell nice (who knew?), so I have to admit that I had way too much fun coming up with these blends. I tried to get really creative and come up with some really nice and somewhat unique scents that for me remind me of some of the best things that come with this time of year. I may live in the suburbs in the Southeast where we don’t really have seasons, but when I diffuse these blends I can pretend I am in a cozy cabin in the mountains wrapped in a blanket by a crackling fire sipping a hot beverage…
As the weather cools off more and more until it is eventually too cold to have the windows open I find that using these oil blends really helps keep my home clean, fresh, and from becoming too stuffy. Plus they are super relaxing and really help get me into the holiday spirit and elevate my mood.
Winter Essential Oil Blends
Sparkling blankets of snow, clear blue skies, pine trees, frozen lakes, cozy fires, soft blankets, and sweaters… Freshly baked pies and cookies, hot chocolate, peppermint candy… I really tried to capture this magical time of year with the blends listed below.
And here are a few more because why not? Haha. Diffuse these while you are working on your favorite holiday crafts with the kids or relaxing with friends and family. They will appreciate it as much as you do. Throwing a chic holiday party? These recipes are great for adding that extra special touch of holiday magic.
If you are new to essential oils make sure that you buy high-quality organic ones that are steam distilled or extracted only using alcohols. Cheap oils are often extracted with toxic chemicals, if not organic they contain pesticides, and they tend to also be diluted in vegetable oils. Most EO’s are quite affordable and even the ones that aren’t are worth spending the extra money on for their incredible health benefits.
Here are the brands that I know and trust:
- Mountain Rose Herbs
- Starwest Botanicals
- Sunrise Botanics (essential oils and absolutes)
- Young Living Essential Oils
Stovetop Potpourri Recipes
If essential oils are not your thing or you want to save money another great option for filling your home or apartment with holiday scents is stovetop potpourri. It is super easy to make and really helps make your home smell wonderful! This is actually a neat trick that realtors use when hosting an open house. If you live in a very dry climate this will also help to humidify the air.
All you need to do is add any combination of the following ingredients you prefer into a medium to large size pot filled with water and simmer it on your stovetop –
- Fresh Rosemary
- Fresh Eucalyptus
- Fresh Fir or Pine Needles
- Fresh Cranberries
- Orange Slices
- Lemon Slices
- Vanilla Pod
- Cinnamon Sticks
- Cardamom Pods
- Star Anise
- Apple Slices
- Fresh Mint Leaves
I hope you really enjoy the above recipes. What are your favorite scents? Leave a comment below.
